Painting on wood: Algonquin-Inspired Landscape Painting

Paint a Canadian landscape on natural wood while using the grain, knots and warm undertones as part of the composition instead of covering them up. You’ll explore expressive approaches inspired by Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, build believable greens, slate greys and earthy colour mixes, and work with acrylic washes, opaque layers, palette-knife texture and dry-brush details. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a finished, sealed landscape painting on wood ready to hang.
WORKSHOP RUNDOWN

Hour 1: Canadian Landscape & Surface Prep

Explore Tom Thomson’s field sketches, colour choices and compositional approaches, then examine the natural wood surface for grain, knots and other features that can become part of the image. Begin mapping the composition with a tonal sketch on paper or directly onto the wood.

Hour 2: Colour Mixing & Base Layers

Build a Canadian landscape palette using greens, slate greys, mossy tones and earthy colours for skies, foliage, water and rock. Block in the main areas with fluid acrylic washes while allowing the natural wood grain to remain visible.

Hour 3: Texture, Light & Depth

Develop the landscape with more opaque layers, foreground trees, shoreline shapes and water details. Explore contrast, value, aerial perspective, palette-knife texture and expressive mark-making while refining the composition with hands-on guidance.

Hour 4: Details, Finishing & Showcase

Add final highlights, branches, textures and focal details, then apply a protective matte or satin finish to preserve the completed piece. Wrap up with an informal group showcase of the finished landscapes.
