Learn the essential acrylic painting fundamentals, then spend most of the workshop putting them into practice on a finished piece of your own. You’ll get comfortable with brushes and paint handling, explore value and colour mixing, and learn how to translate a photographic reference into shapes, colour and contrast. With hands-on guidance as you work, you’ll build your painting layer by layer and leave with an original 8 × 10 acrylic painting plus a solid foundation for continuing on your own.

All Materials Included

Acrylic paints, brushes, canvas paper, an 8 × 10 stretched canvas and studio supplies are provided.

WORKSHOP RUNDOWN

Part 1: Acrylic Basics & Paint Handling

Get familiar with the essential materials used in acrylic painting and learn how different brushes and paint-handling techniques affect the marks you make. Practise with round, filbert and bright brushes while getting comfortable with how acrylic paint behaves on the surface.

Part 2: Colour & Value In Practice

Build a simple value scale to explore light, dark and contrast, then work through practical colour-mixing exercises. Learn how to adjust hue, value and intensity in ways you can apply directly to your own painting without getting buried in technical colour theory.

Part 3: Build Your Painting

Work from a photographic reference to plan and block in the main shapes, colours and values of your image. Build the painting through layers with hands-on guidance, refining colour, contrast, edges and details as you work toward a finished 8 × 10 acrylic painting.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

By The End Of This Workshop, You Will:

Understand the basic materials used in acrylic painting and how to use them.
Handle common acrylic brushes with greater confidence and control.
Use value to create clearer light, shadow and contrast.
Understand basic colour relationships and mix your own colours.
Translate a photographic reference into a painted image.

Kina Forney

Kina Forney is a multidisciplinary artist and painting instructor who believes in the “messy magic” of making art. She’ll help you build your skills, trust the process and embrace a little mess along the way. Dry cleaning is not included.

Just Bring Yourself: All required painting materials and tools are provided. Bring a creative attitude, a little curiosity and clothes you won’t mind getting a bit of paint on.

14+ days before the first class: Full refund to your original payment method.
7–13 days before: Full-value UAC LAB credit.
Less than 7 days before: No refund or credit.

Registrations can be transferred to another person at no charge before the class begins. Missed classes or sessions are not eligible for refunds, credits or individual make-up classes.

If UAC LAB cancels a class, you can choose a full refund or full-value UAC LAB credit. If we reschedule and the new date does not work for you, you may also request a refund or credit.
