Working with Fibre: Punch Needle

Spend four weeks learning punch needle from the ground up and turn your own design into a finished framed textile artwork. You’ll practise the core technique, develop a design on paper, transfer it to monk’s cloth and build texture, pattern and colour with yarn before finishing and mounting the piece in a unique thrifted frame. Along the way, you’ll explore sustainable materials and upcycling while developing a punch needle process you can continue using after the course.
COURSE RUNDOWN

Class 1: Fibre 101

Explore punch needle artwork for inspiration and get straight into the technique. Learn how to thread the tool, stretch and secure monk’s cloth and practise foundational punching techniques through small shapes and exercises.

Class 2: Develop Your Design

Create your custom design on paper, transfer it onto monk’s cloth and choose a yarn colour palette and thrifted frame. Prepare your canvas and begin building the first sections of your final textile artwork.

Class 3: Production Studio

Spend dedicated studio time developing the main body of your artwork with direct instructor guidance. Refine your control of density, texture, colour and pattern while working toward a finished composition.

Class 4: Finish & Frame

Complete the final areas of your punch needle piece, trim and secure the materials, then mount the finished artwork in your selected thrifted frame. Wrap up by sharing the completed pieces and looking at how you can continue the technique in future projects.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
