Put on a Show with Your Friends!

Learn how Animation Show n Tell Ottawa grew from a conversation between friends into a recurring community event, then use those lessons to shape a realistic first version of your own. Spencer Moreland walks through ASNTO’s origin story, audience, identity, venues, costs, volunteers, schedules and the things that changed from year to year. The session finishes with a hands-on planning exercise where you’ll turn a loose idea into a clearer event concept with a practical sense of what you can actually take on.
WORKSHOP RUNDOWN

Part 1: The Origin Story

Hear how a conversation between two friends at a Halloween party became Animation Show n Tell Ottawa. Look at the first decisions that turned the idea into an actual event instead of something that stayed hypothetical.

Part 2: Planning & Finding Your Audience

Explore who the event is for, what you want people to experience and how an event develops an identity. Look at naming, audience, purpose and the choices that help people understand why they should show up.

Part 3: Logistics & Making It Happen

Work through the practical side of running an event, including venues, costs, doors, seating, schedules, communication and the problems that inevitably come up. Explore how responsibilities can be shared so one person is not trying to carry the entire event.

Part 4: Growing & Evolving

Look at how ASNTO changed from year to year, including what worked, what did not and what needed to change. Discuss how to judge what you can realistically take on, when to say no to new ideas and how to evolve an event without losing what people value about it.

Part 5: Plan Your Own Event

Turn the discussion into a practical starting point for your own idea. Brainstorm the event, identify what it would need to happen and shape a realistic first version that fits your audience, resources and capacity.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

By The End Of This Session, You Will:

  • Turn a loose idea into a clearer event with a defined audience and purpose.
  • Understand the practical considerations around venues, costs, volunteers, schedules and audience turnout.
  • Identify what you can realistically take on for a first version of an event.
  • Recognize where collaborators, partners and volunteers can make an event stronger and more manageable.
  • Understand how an event can evolve over time based on experience, feedback and available capacity.
  • Leave with the beginnings of a practical plan for your own screening, showcase or creative community event.
