Analog Animation: Clay Stop-Motion

Sculpt an original clay character and bring it to life through frame-by-frame stop-motion animation. You’ll build a posable character, set up camera and lighting rigs, work with frame-capture software, and explore timing, spacing, weight and physical performance as you create a short animated sequence. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with your clay character, a finished digital video and leftover materials so you can keep experimenting with stop-motion at home.
WORKSHOP RUNDOWN

Phase 1: Character Sculpting & Rigging

Sculpt an original clay character designed to move and hold its shape during animation. Explore simple internal supports, character construction and ways to keep the figure stable while posing it frame by frame.

Phase 2: Camera Setup & Frame Capture

Set up overhead camera rigs and lighting stations, then learn the basics of frame-capture software and onion-skinning. Practise keeping the camera, lighting and character placement consistent from frame to frame.

Phase 3: Animate Your Character

Bring your character to life through frame-by-frame movement while exploring timing, spacing, weight and expressive physical performance. Refine the sequence as you work and troubleshoot movement with hands-on guidance.

Phase 4: Export & Take It Home

Finish your animation and export it as a shareable digital video. Leave with the completed file, your original clay character and leftover materials so you can continue experimenting with stop-motion at home.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

By The End Of This Workshop, You Will:

  • Sculpt a posable clay character designed for stop-motion animation.
  • Understand how camera placement and consistent lighting affect frame-by-frame animation.
  • Use frame-capture software and onion-skinning to build a sequence.
  • Apply timing, spacing and weight to create more believable movement.
  • Animate a short original stop-motion performance.
  • Export your finished animation as a shareable video file.
  • Leave with your clay character and materials to continue animating at home.
