In a creative rut? Convinced you are just not “good at art”? Forget about making something perfect and show up to make something interesting instead.

Trash to Treasure is a four-class mixed-media course built around experimentation, play, and asking one very useful creative question: “What if I...?” Working with cardboard, paper mache clay, acrylic paint, magazines, newspaper, discarded packaging, and whatever other odd materials catch your attention, you will turn everyday rubbish into original artwork.

This course is designed for adults who want to reconnect with making without worrying about whether they already know how to draw, paint, or make “good art.” Each class gives you room to experiment with materials, follow unexpected ideas, and build a finished mixed-media piece. The course wraps up with a small exhibition where everyone gets to put their work on display.

Debqi is a mixed-media artist, chaos goblin and alliteration aficionado who loves trying unfamiliar techniques and asking, “What if I...?” She approaches art as a place to experiment, make a mess, follow strange ideas, and see where they lead.

Course Rundown

Class 1: Rubbish, Reimagined

• Explore discarded and recycled materials as potential art supplies.
• Experiment with cardboard, paper, packaging, and found objects.
• Learn how to make and work with paper mache clay.
• Begin developing an idea without worrying about what the finished piece is supposed to become.

Class 2: Build Something Strange

• Develop your project using cardboard, paper mache clay, and found materials.
• Experiment with building forms, combining materials, and changing direction as new ideas emerge.
• Use glue, hot glue, and basic construction techniques to bring separate pieces together.
• Continue developing your artwork through hands-on experimentation.

Class 3: Colour, Collage & Layers

• Prepare surfaces using gesso and opaque acrylic paint.
• Add colour, collage, magazines, newspaper, and other visual material.
• Explore layering, texture, contrast, and unexpected material combinations.
• Refine your artwork while keeping room for experimentation and happy accidents.

Class 4: Finish It & Show It Off

• Add final details, surface treatments, and finishing touches to your artwork.
• Work through any last creative problems with instructor support.
• Prepare your finished piece for display.
• Wrap up the course with a group exhibition celebrating everyone’s finished work.

By The End Of This Course, You Will:

What We Provide

• Painting Supplies: Gesso, opaque acrylic paints, brushes, and related painting materials.
• Construction Supplies: White glue, hot glue guns, gloves, and basic project-building materials.
• Mixed-Media Materials: Cardboard, magazines, newspaper, recycled packaging, and assorted found materials.
• Finishing Materials: UV resin and other available materials for finishing and detailing projects.

What To Bring & Requirements

• Found Materials: Bring any clean, interesting pieces of packaging, cardboard, plastic mesh, boxes, paper, or other bits of everyday rubbish that you would like to experiment with.
• Clothing: Wear something you do not mind getting paint, glue, or other art materials on.
• No Experience Required: This course is beginner-friendly and specifically welcomes adults who do not consider themselves artists.
