Carve & Print: How-To One-Colour Linocut

Turn a drawing into a hand-carved linocut block, then ink it and pull your own handmade relief prints on paper. In this four-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to transfer a design, use V-tools and U-tools safely, refine and proof your block, and build an even layer of relief ink for hand printing. You’ll leave with your carved block and finished prints, plus an introduction to how the same process can be used for printing on garments and fabric.
WORKSHOP RUNDOWN

Phase 1: History, Tools & Design Transfer

Get introduced to linocut and the essential tools used in relief printing. Develop a simple design directly on the block or transfer a 4 × 6-inch sketch onto the linoleum in preparation for carving.

Phase 2: Safe Carving & Gouge Techniques

Learn how V-tools and U-tools create different lines, shapes and textures while practising safe carving techniques. Use a bench hook to stabilize your block and keep your hands safely behind the cutting edge as you begin carving your design.

Phase 3: Block Refinement & Proofing

Refine line work, clear background areas and add texture before preparing the block for printing. Pull a test proof to see how your carving translates onto paper and make final adjustments where needed.

Phase 4: Ink, Print & Explore

Roll out water-based relief ink with a brayer and pull handmade impressions onto fine-art paper. Review your finished prints and see how the same carved block can also be used to print onto garments and fabric.
