We digitize developed negatives, mounted slides and unmounted transparency film using dedicated photographic scanners and professional scanning software.
WHAT WE CAN SCAN
35MM FILM
Developed 35mm colour negatives, black-and-white negatives and unmounted transparencies are scanned using a dedicated Plustek OpticFilm scanner with SilverFast scanning software.
MOUNTED SLIDES
Standard mounted 35mm slides can be scanned individually. Please leave them in their mounts.
MEDIUM-FORMAT FILM
Developed 120 and 220 negatives or transparencies are scanned using our Epson V750 professional photo scanner.
LARGE-FORMAT FILM
We can scan 4 × 5 sheet film and unmounted transparencies as large as 8 × 10 inches.
CHOOSE YOUR SCAN
1. STANDARD JPEG
A practical digital file for viewing, sharing, social media and smaller everyday prints.
2. ENHANCED JPEG
A larger, more detailed file suitable for editing, enlargements and preserving important photographs.
3. ARCHIVAL TIFF
A high-resolution TIFF containing substantially more image information for serious editing, preservation and future reproduction. These files are much larger because detail has apparently never heard of moderation.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
Every scan includes:
- Careful handling
- Basic cropping and orientation
- General colour and exposure correction
- Conversion of negatives into positive images
- One digital file per frame
- Delivery through a download link or customer-supplied USB drive
HOW IT WORKS
Purchase your scanning service online or in person at the UAC Print Lab.
If ordering online, select the correct original size or film format, scan quality and quantity.
Bring your photographs, artwork, documents, negatives or slides to:
UAC Print Lab at 50 Bayswater Avenue Ottawa, between 9AM-5PM.
When you arrive, provide the name used to place your online order. We will use it to locate and confirm your order in our system.
Bring photographs, film and artwork in a protective sleeve, envelope, folder or archival storage page, loose negatives are tiny chaos and remarkably good at disappearing.
We will review your materials when they arrive. If the selected service does not match the original, or if additional restoration, cleaning or oversized scanning is required, we will contact you before beginning any additional work.
We will notify you when your digital files are ready and your original materials can be picked up.
Please do not mail original photographs, film or artwork to the lab unless you have contacted us and received confirmation first.
THE SERIOUS BIT
All film must already be developed. We do not currently process film.
The price is per individual frame, mounted slide or sheet of film, not per strip or roll. Select the appropriate format and scan quality, then enter the total number of frames you want scanned.
Please submit film in sleeves, mounts or another protective container. Do not send loose negatives rolling around in an envelope like tiny transparent confetti.
Basic scanning does not include extensive restoration, reconstruction of missing image areas, colourization or removal of severe scratches, mould, fingerprints and other damage.
Digital dust and scratch reduction may not work correctly on traditional black-and-white film. Additional cleanup or restoration can be quoted separately.
Film condition, unusual frame spacing, non-standard formats and large quantities may affect pricing and turnaround time. Standard production time is approximately 3–5 business days.
NEED A RIDICULOUS NUMBER SCANNED?
Automatic bulk discounts are available for orders of 50 or more frames of the same film format and scan quality. For very large collections or unusual archives, contact us before ordering.
